Nova Star Cruises has paid $3,200 it owed the city of Portland for renting the departure building at the Ocean Gateway terminal during the final two months of last year.

The lease costs $1,600 a month, including the months in the offseason when the company does not occupy the building.

Nova Star Cruises began operating daily ferry service last year between Portland and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, from May through October. The company is now negotiating with the Nova Scotia government for a contract for the 2015 sailing season.

A Portland Press Herald story published last week reported that the company was in arrears in payments to the city.

The city on Monday received payment for November, and on Tuesday it received payment for December. The rent for January was due on Jan. 1, but city officials say they are not concerned because the company has been making payments at the end of each month.

To date, the company owes the city no other money. It has paid for all its berthing fees, common-area fees and fees based on the number of passengers and vehicles.
