Local police have arrested a Massachusetts man in connection with Friday’s robbery of a Fairfield convenience store.
Police arrested Antonio Recardo Nobre, 38, of Dorchester, Mass., on Wednesday, charging him with a single count of robbery for his alleged role in the incident.
At the time of his arrest, Nobre also had outstanding warrants for failure to report and failure to appear on charges of terrorizing and theft by unauthorized taking or transfer.
Charges related to a stolen vehicle and multiple vehicle burglaries in Fairfield also are possible, according Fairfield police Sgt. Paul St. Amand.
Nobre is accused of entering the Cumberland Farms convenience store at 205 Main St. shortly before 2 a.m. Friday and demanding money from the lone female clerk.
Police said the robber gestured to indicate that he had a weapon at the time, but he never showed it to the clerk.
The robbery attempt was foiled when a customer entered the store, causing the robber to flee with only a pack of cigarettes.
St. Amand said police were seeking Nobre in connection with the robbery after receiving at least three tips identifying him as the culprit based on security camera footage shared via news entities and social media.
Officers located Nobre about 10:45 a.m. Wednesday when responding to an assault complaint at a residence on Preble Street in Fairfield.
Nobre was at the residence, where officers also found items related to the robbery, including a Champions-brand jacket that appeared to be the one worn by the robber in security camera footage.
Other items found at the residence included a Toyota Corolla stolen Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning on High Street in Fairfield and items from at least six vehicle burglaries that had taken place in Fairfield within the past two weeks.
Police obtained a search warrant to recover the jacket and other items as evidence. As of Wednesday night, no charges had been made in the auto theft or the vehicle burglaries.
St. Amand said Nobre had lived in Maine previously and returned from Massachusetts in recent weeks.
He credited tips from the public and assistance from the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office in helping police arrest the suspect.
