WINTHROP — Freshman Sierra Huff scored an unassisted goal a minute and 30 seconds into overtime to give the Winthrop girls soccer team a 2-1 victory over Telstar in a Mountain Valley Conference game Monday afternoon.
The victory is believed to be the second for the Ramblers in four years.
“Very surreal,” said Winthrop coach Jaynelle Smith, who is in her second season. “The Winthrop girls were very excited, very shocked. It is very surreal, although I feel like we’ve had the capability to win the last two years but they themselves did know they had it in them.
Shie Smith, a sophomore, gave Winthrop a 1-0 lead midway through the first half. Telstar evened the contest at 1-1 when Lexi Hart scored two minutes after Smith found the back of the net.
Tehya Johnson had 20 saves for the Rebels (0-6-0) while Haley Choate had four for the Ramblers (1-5-0).
FIELD HOCKEY
LISBON 3, WINTHROP 1: Kate Phillbrick scored two goals to lead the Greyhounds in Winthrop.
Charlotte Mooney scored a goal for Lisbon, while Chase Collier added three assists for Lisbon (7-1).
Corinna Coulton scored the lone goal for Winthrop (3-3-2).
BOOTHBAY 1, HALL-DALE 0: Nicole Clark scored an unassisted goal about 15 minutes into the game to lead Boothbay to the MVC win
Erica Eames had two saves to earn the win for Boothbay (4-2-1).
Molly French had 10 for the Bulldogs (1-7-0).
OAK HILL5, ST. DOMINIC 0: Kylee Veilleux scored two goals an Hayley Marshall added two assists to lead the Raiders.
Kayla Veilleux, Danielle Samson and Heather Hannigan also scored for Oak Hill (8-0-0).
Abby Fuller had and Megan Labee combined to make eight saves while Taylor Bourgoin had 17 for the Saints (2-5-1).
