AUGUSTA — The city’s police chief and a sergeant are among those who were reportedly injured Saturday in a motorcycle crash during an off-duty charity event.

Chief Robert Gregoire and Police Sgt. Christopher Shaw, who were riding separate motorcycles, were injured during a charity ride for the Shriners in Jay, said Deputy Chief Jared Mills of the Augusta Police. Gregoire’s wife, Cathy Gregoire, who was riding with her husband, also was injured. Shaw was alone on his motorcycle, Mills said.

Mills declined to describe their injuries or whether they are still hospitalized.

“I can say we have been in constant contact with both the Gregoire family and the Shaw family, providing them with support in their time of need,” Mills said.

In an email sent early Sunday to city officials, Mills wrote that all three were “currently being treated for and recovering from their injuries.”

City Manager William Bridgeo wrote in another email to city officials that injuries suffered by Cathy Gregoire and Shaw “were not that serious,” but that Robert Gregoire “is still undergoing assessment and treatment.”

Bridgeo did not immediately respond to a phone message Sunday seeking additional information.

Augusta Mayor Mark O’Brien said he spoke to Bridgeo Sunday. O’Brien had not received an update on Shaw’s condition, but the Gregoires are being treated at a Lewiston hospital.

“They don’t seem to be life threatening injuries, but they are serious,” O’Brien said.

Shaw, a longtime motorcycle enthusiast, is one of the officers who routinely uses a department motorcycle to conduct patrols.

Mills said the department is a close family that has felt the impact of the accident.

“We thank everyone for their thoughts and kind sentiments,” he said.

O’Brien said the department will continue to perform well as Robert Gregoire and Shaw recover.

“Deputy Chief Mills will do what’s necessary to keep them running smoothly,” O’Brien said.

The primary concern of city officials is the well being of Shaw and the Gregoires.

“The chief and his wife are in our prayers,” O’Brien said. “We’re praying for a speedy and full recovery for both.”
