BOSTON — Alexis Richards, of Waterville Senior High School, and Monique Mills, of Skowhegan Area High School, recently celebrated with the Boston Red Sox. The students were among 10 outstanding Maine high school students who participated in a ceremony at Fenway Park before they played against the Baltimore Orioles. Each student received the Maine Red Sox Service Scholarship of $1,000 to be invested directly into their college education.
On the field to honor the students on Sunday were Maine Gov. Paul LePage, Red Sox Executive Vice President & Senior Advisor to the President/CEO Charles Steinberg, Red Sox Foundation Executive Director Gena Borson and Red Sox Foundation Board Member Linda Pizzuti Henry. In addition to acknowledging the accomplishments of the recipients, the Red Sox also celebrated the Pine Tree State by designating Sunday as “Maine Day at Fenway Park.”
The 10 students, chosen by the Red Sox Foundation from select Maine high schools, were chosen from a competitive pool of candidates based on academic performance, financial aid eligibility, and a commitment to community service. The foundation selected Maine students who most embody the positive attributes of young leaders of “Red Sox Nation.”
This is the inaugural year of the Red Sox scholarship program in Maine, which now runs in all six New England states.
