MONMOUTH — The Monmouth Academy Decathlon Team, coached by Cathy Foyt and Scott Foyt, recently competed in the 2014 United States Academic Decathlon, Small School National Online Competition.

Monmouth finished seventh place in the United States in the tournament. Two Monmouth students won National medals: Marinna Smith in art and Angus Koller in math and science. Also competing were Emily Barnett, Sabrina Beck, Sherman Spears and Jordyn Mann.

In March, the Monmouth Academy Academic Decathlon Team competed in the State of Maine Academic Decathlon Championship at Deering High School and won the State of Maine Small School Championship.

The following students participated this year in the State Championship for Monmouth and won the following medals: Alternate team members: Madi Neal; Samantha Blundon; Brett Jamison, bronze medal in economics; Matt Brooks, gold medal in language/literature; Shannon Buzzell, gold medal in art; Amelia Freeman, bronze medals in music and art; Sami Grandahl, bronze medal in music and silver medal in essay; Kim Lewis, bronze medals in language/literature, essay and science; and Kiya Caron, bronze medal — art and silver medals in music and economics.

Competition team members: Emily Barnett; Becki Bryant; Sabrina Beck, bronze medal in essay; Sherman Spears, gold medal in interview; Jordyn Mann, gold medal in essay; Corey Tatarka, bronze medal in art, silver medal in music and silver medal in speech; Angus Koller, bronze medal in social science, silver medal in language/literature and gold medal in essay; Marinna Smith, bronze medals in language/literature, music and science, silver medals in social science, art and economics, and third highest scorer in the State of Maine Scholastic Division; and Sarah Record, bronze medals in language/literature, economics and essay, silver medals in music, social science and art and gold medals in interview and speech, highest team scorer and highest scorer in the State of Maine Varsity Division.

Academic Decathlon is comprised of students who study together as a team for a year and then compete in 10 different decathlon categories: art, economics, essay, interview, language/literature, mathematics, music, science, social science and speech.
