SKOWHEGAN — Detectives converged on a home on Milburn Street in Skowhegan Monday afternoon in their search for clues in the death of Aurele Fecteau whose death in his Waterville home last month has been ruled a homicide.
Waterville Police Chief Joseph Massey said Tuesday city detectives were in Skowhegan assisting state police investigators investigate the death of Fecteau, 92, who who was found dead by a family member May 23 inside his Brooklyn Avenue home in Waterville.
The death has been ruled a homicide by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, though the cause of death and other details have not been released.
Residents of the Milburn Street area on Skowhegan’s south side said late Monday that state police troopers, detectives and a mobile crime truck were in the neighborhood for most of Monday afternoon.
“The cops were inside and outside and everywhere,” resident Jessica Raymond said after the scene had been cleared. “I saw the crime units and state troopers and just the cops all out there … and just rumors. It was in the apartment building two houses over.”
Fecteau’s home, at 33 Brooklyn Ave., is near Waterville Senior High School and Mid-Maine Technical Center.
The Milburn Street apartment searched by police on Monday was the scene of a stabbing in April. The victim, David Greene, 34, survived stab wounds to the head, but no one has been charged.
Skowhegan Police Chief Ted Blais acknowledged that Waterville and state police detectives with the Major Crimes Unit were in Skowhegan on Monday, but said their presence was not connected with the April stabbing. The stabbing case remains under investigation, he said.
Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said there was no update this week on the Fecteau homicide investigation.
Police are asking for the assistance of anyone who may have been in the area of Brooklyn Avenue and Vose Street in Waterville, where Fecteau lived, May 22 or 23. The telephone number for state police in Augusta is 624-7076.
