WINTHROP — Winthrop High School has named its top 10 students in the class of 2014.
Maureen Katherine Tierney, daughter of David and Julie Tierney of Winthrop, is valedictorian.
Tierney is a member of the Drama Club and Latin Club, serving as historian and then president). She is also co-captain of the Math Team, on the Student Council and a member of the National Honor Society. She has played softball.
Tierney has tutored her peers and been a mentor to middle school students. She participated in the Fun after School Program at the middle school.
Tierney plans to attend Saint Michael’s College in Vermont majoring in anthropology and archaeology.
Alex Matthew Chamberland, son of Greg and Parise Chamberland of Winthrop, is salutatorian.
Chamberland is a member of the Tennis Team and Nordic Ski Team, serving as captain of both. He is a member of the Latin Club, Math Team and was also a member of the Business Club. He is a member of the National Honor Society. Outside of school, Chamberland serves as a volunteer for the Knights of Columbus for St. Francis Xavier Church.
Chamberland plans to attend the University of New England as an undeclared major.
Jessica Nancy Ames is the daughter of Daniel Ames of Gardiner and Melinda Edwards of Winthrop. Ames is a member of the field hockey team and was named senior captain. She was selected to the Field Hockey Association All-State Team and will play in the All-Star Game this summer. She plays in the Indoor Field Hockey League. She is a member of the Math Team, Latin Club and Student Council. Ames is a member of the National Honor Society and served as secretary. She was nominated a Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen. Outside of school, Ames was in the Red Cross Leadership Program and coaches girls in field hockey through the YMCA program.
Ames plans to attend the University of New Hampshire, majoring in athletic training.
Alexandra Joy Conant is the daughter of Rick and Monica Conant of Winthrop.
Conant is a member of the Latin Club and has competed in several sports: field hockey, lacrosse, alpine skiing, Nordic skiing and cross country running.
Conant plans to attend the University of South Carolina, majoring in hospitality.
Collette Elizabeth Connor is the daughter of Marc and Laura Connor of Winthrop.
Connor has been a member of several teams and clubs during her high school career: soccer, softball, Drama Club and French Club. She is on the Student Council and has served as secretary and was elected a member of the National Honor Society. Connor has volunteered in the Fun after School and mentoring programs. She attended Dirigo Girls State.
Connor plans to attend Western New England University, majoring in biomedical engineering.
Randi Jennifer Dennett is the daughter of Tim Dennett of Augusta and Carolyn Dennett of Winthrop.
Dennett has been a member of the softball team, soccer team and captain of the basketball team. She is a member of the Student Council, serving as vice president then president, and is a member of the National Honor Society. She also coaches youth softball.
Dennett plans to attend Thomas College, majoring in early childhood education.
Carissa Renae Fleury is the daughter of Kim Fleury of Winthrop and Terry Smith of California.
Fleury was named class vice president and is currently class president. She is a member of the Latin Club and was vice president. She is a member of the National Honor Society and is the president this year. She has been a member of the Drama Club and Student Council. She is a varsity tennis player. Outside of school , Fleury is a volunteer at a special needs camp and volunteers at a soup kitchen. She also has a part-time job.
Fleury plans to attend Tufts University with a double major in political science and Arabic.
Micaela Margaret Hajduk is the daughter of George and Joanne Hajduk of Winthrop.
Hajduk is a member of the field hockey team, Nordic ski team and track. She is a member of the Drama Club and Latin Club. She is a member of the National Honor Society. Hajduk coached field hockey for the recreation department and served as a Maine Youth Leadership Ambassador.
Hajduk plans to attend St. Michael’s College in Vermont, majoring in biology on a physical therapy track. Her plans also include playing field hockey at the collegiate level.
Catherine Elizabeth Ouellette is the daughter of Bob and Becky Ouellette of Winthrop.
Ouellette is a member of the field hockey team, the softball team and has played basketball. She is a member of the Latin Club and served as class president. She is vice president of the Maine Principals’ Advisory Committee and a member of the Mountain Valley Conference Student Advisory Committee.
Ouellette has been a member of a summer softball travel team and has worked as a grade school volunteer and youth sports volunteer.
Ouellette plans to attend Bates College in the pre-law program.
Zachary James Steele is the son of Jim and Sandy Steele of Winthrop.
Steele plays golf, baseball and is captain of the basketball team. He was elected to the National Honor Society and attended Dirigo Boys State. He has also been a member of the math team. Outside of school, he has worked with both basketball and baseball youth groups.
Steele plans to attend Wentworth Institute of Technology, majoring in electromechanical engineering.
