Jefferson voters chose two School Committee members and set the town budget on Tuesday.
In results from the Town Meeting, Shawn St. Cyr and Mariaelana Solorzano were elected to the School Committee, with 151 and 130 votes, respectively. The third candidate, Nicole L. Potter, received 96 votes.
The municipal budget approved by voters is $708,816. That’s $24,605, or 3.6 percent, more than last year’s budget.
The increase is mostly a result of the cost of the town’s snow plowing contracts, which rose from $156,680 to $178,644.
Jefferson flat-funded plowing last year to avoid driving up bids for the next round of contracts, which started in the fall, Selectman James Hilton said. Some of the increase in the budget this year makes up for a small gap last year.
Other than the usual municipal government expenses, voters also approved appropriations of $82,264 for the reconstruction of Atkins and Hallowell roads, $3,000 for work on County Road, $20,000 for the fire truck reserve fund, $750 for ambulance service and $9,539 requested by various community organizations.
For Atkins and Hallowell roads, $72,764 will come from the state block grant, and the remaining $9,500 from local taxes.
In addition, voters approved a proposal by the selectmen to move about $170,000 left over from funds the town appropriated for the construction of the new school building, which opened in 2011. The money will be transferred to an account for long-term building repairs, which already had about $24,000 in it.
“It was just kind of sitting there in an account, so we felt that it should be put into some kind of account that would be useful later on,” Hilton said.
Selectman Robert “Jigger” Clark Jr. was re-elected in an uncontested race with 208 votes. The race for the Budget Committee also was uncontested, and newcomers Peter Brush and Lawrence Grimard will join incumbents Blaine Kimball and Darin Walker.
