I recently attended a constituent meeting in Mount Vernon with Sen. Tom Saviello, R-Wilton, and Rep. Dennis Keschl, R-Belgrade. Two topics of primary concern were Medicare expansion (L.D. 1578) and the proposed metallic mineral mining rules (L.D. 1772).

Dr. Daniel Onion of Farmington, gave convincing evidence that providing health care services, including prevention, to Franklin County’s poor has led to exceptional health outcomes in that county. I applaud Saviello’s determination to follow his conscience and work with the Democrats and other Republicans on the Medicaid expansion issue. Keschl says remains uncommitted on the issue.

Serious questions were raised as to whether the proposed metal mining rules are adequate to protect our lakes and streams, or to protect taxpayers from the cost of perpetual clean-up.
