WHEN MAINE BECAME a state in 1820, it decided, like most other states in the union, to conduct its elections in November. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but that time was 100 years before the state created deer and bear hunting seasons that coincide with the election season.

Lawmakers just not listening to budget office
Every year around this time, the Congressional Budget Office issues a report about just how grim the nation's long-term financial health is. A few lawmakers wring their hands and say they will get serious about fixing the problem, but then they don't. We, as a nation, rush toward a debt-induced disaster if no one heeds the warning.

Octoberfest, car show set for Saturday
FAIRFIELD -- Fall Octoberfest and car show is planned from 9 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Fairfeild Center Grange at the corner of Routes 139 and 104. The festival will feature crafts, homemade pickles, jellies, as well as a luncheon of hot dogs and other goodies.
