SIDNEY — Motorists avoided serious injuries in two separate crashes on Interstate 95 Friday afternoon, seconds apart and both involving tractor-trailers in heavy rain.

The crashes occurred on the highway’s southbound lane at mile 122, near the Drummond Road overpass.

The road was reduced to one lane for about two hours, said Trooper William Plourde of the Maine State Police.

At around 5:10 p.m. Friday, one car hydroplaned and spun into the path of one truck, and was hit head-on, Plourde said.

When another truck behind it saw the crash, it was hit from behind by a Massachusetts man’s car.

Robert Clockeblie, 45, of Gardiner, was trying to pass the tractor-trailer truck when his car hydroplaned and spun into the path of the first truck, which hit the car head-on, Plourde said.

When Danielle Howard, 29, of North Carolina, saw that accident, he slowed down to a near stop and was hit from behind by John Gallagher, 18, of Hamson, Mass., who was riding with a passenger, according to Plourde.

The front passenger side of the Gallagher’s car was crushed underneath the truck and sustained extensive damage, Plourde said, but the two men in the car had only minor injuries and weren’t taken to the hospital.

“It’s a miracle that the passenger wasn’t killed, let alone not even injured,” Plourde said.

Plourde said Clockeblie, in the first car, had minor injuries and refused medical transport, while that truck driver, Debra Ryan, 56, of Prince Edward Island, was taken to the hospital for minor injuries.
