AUGUSTA — The Democratic winner of the special election in Maine Senate District 19 is joining the Legislature for a special session.

Republican Gov. Paul LePage swore in Democratic Sen. Eloise Vitelli of Arrowsic on Thursday morning. Vitelli won the election Tuesday to fill a seat left vacant by the resignation of Democratic Sen. Seth Goodall.

The secretary of state’s election results show that Vitelli won with a total of 4,631 votes, edging out Republican Paula Benoit of Phippsburg by a margin of 462 votes.

Goodall, a Richmond Democrat, resigned in July to lead the Small Business Administration in New England.

The Democratic-controlled Legislature is meeting Thursday to vote on a $149.5 million bond proposal and consider a bill to create a mental health unit at Maine State Prison.
