A drunken-driving conviction will cost a Brewer police commander thousands of dollars in lost pay in addition to court-imposed criminal penalties.

Christopher Martin, a Brewer police captain who pleaded guilty to driving drunk, will be suspended for 60 days without pay and demoted to lieutenant following an internal investigation.

A Bangor police office issued Martin a court summons for alleged drunken driving on Aug. 24.

City Manager Stephen Bost, along with Public Safety Director Perry Antone, handed down Martin’s final discipline on Wednesday, the same day the 19-year veteran of the department pleaded guilty in Bangor District Court.

The disciplinary letter, distributed by city officials, says Martin cannot return to work until his license is reinstated and he attends substance abuse counseling. He will be on probation for one year.
