WAYNE — Chloe Maxmin of Divest Harvard and Unity College President Stephen Mulkey will talk about the fossil fuel divestment effort at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4, at Ladd Recreation Center, 26 Gott Road.
Maxim will share her experiences as a young environmentalist, from starting the Climate Action Club at her high school, Lincoln Academy in Newcastle; to her work at Harvard; with 350.org; and founding of First Here, Then Everywhere, a website dedicated to young activists.
Mulkey, who has a master’s degree in biology and ecology, led the Unity College Board of Trustees in a unanimous vote last fall to divest its endowment from fossil fuels. It was the first college in the nation to do so, and has since been followed by four others.
Their efforts are part of a growing movement around the world by students at colleges and universities who see their school’s investment in carbon-heavy assets as conflicting with the mission of education and the well being of future generations, according to a news release.
The discussion is organized by Sustain Wayne. There is no cost and all are welcome. For more information, visit www.sustainwayne.org.
