Oakland police Detective Tracey Frost holds up some metal that was dredged from the bottom of Messalonskee Lake at the boat landing on Monday.
After the town and the Friends of Messalonskee applied for permits, contractor William Mushero Inc. dredged 2 feet of lake bottom, where a bean cannery dumped tons of unwanted metals 100 years ago, according to Frost.
He said the metal has been working up from the bottom, causing minor injuries. Stones will be poured over the dredged site later this week.
“This will be a safer and cleaner area,” Frost said.
