CARRABASSETT VALLEY – Sugarloaf Mountain Resort said it would invest $2.9 million in new snowmaking technology, as well as new skiing terrain and a 30-person outdoor hot tub at the Sugarloaf Mountain Hotel.

The bulk of the $2.9 million in improvements will go toward 200 new energy-efficient snowmaking machines. The snow guns are able to produce the same amount of snow as a traditional snow gun, while using 30-to-40-percent less compressed air, Sugarloaf said.

The snow guns will be installed on several trails, including Narrow Gauge, Scoot, Gondola Line, Ramdown and Widowmaker. Some snow guns will be mounted on sleds, allowing them to be moved as needed.

Trail expansion also will continue on Burnt Mountain as crews begin to work on higher elevations on the northern face of the mountain.

Meanwhile, the Sugarloaf Mountain Hotel will get a new $240,000, 30-person outdoor hot tub. It will be paid for by the Sugarloaf Mountain Condominium Center Association and Sugarloaf.

Other improvements include a new, larger snowmaking pipe on the Gondola Line trail to increase water capacity, as well as widening the existing West Mountain trail to allow ski-racing programs to use it for training purposes.
