AUGUSTA — The following Cony High School students have been selected to attend the American Legion Auxiliary’s Dirigo Girls State and the American Legion’s Dirigo Boys State programs:
Peter Ackerman is the son of Anne-Marie Buschardt and Francis Ackerman of Augusta. Ackerman is a member of the varsity soccer and tennis teams. He has been selected to the National Honor Society, math team, school newspaper, student council and serves as the co-president of the French club. He placed third in C-Span’s 2013 national documentary competition, where he produced a film on the college debt crisis. He volunteers at the Maine International Film Festival, Kennebec Valley Humane Society and CTV7 studios. Ackerman’s plans include traveling abroad and studying film/cinematography and ethology in college.
Olivia Deeves is the daughter of Gail Ottmann-Deeves and Robert Deeves of Chelsea. She is a member of the varsity soccer, basketball and softball teams. She writes for the school newspaper, Ramses. She plans to attend college and law school.
Alexis Dostie is the daughter of Angela and Bruce Dostie of Vassalboro. Dostie participates in Key club, French club and has been selected as a member of the National Honor Society. She competes in varsity soccer and lacrosse. She volunteers at the Kennebec Valley Humane Society in Augusta. She plans to attend college to pursue medicine.
Zachary Gagne is the son of Wendy and Dennis Gagne of Augusta. He captains both the varsity golf and hockey teams. He is a member of the Maine Moose travel hockey team and has been selected to the National Honor Society. He volunteers with youth hockey and youth softball in his community. He plans to attend college to pursue a career in golf/management.
Riley Hopkins is the son of Andrea and David Hopkins of Augusta. Hopkins has been selected to the National Honor Society, serves as vice-president of the Key club, participates in Chizzle Wizzle, dance, student council and writes for the school newspaper. He also participates in cross country. He volunteers at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and his dance studio as an instructor. He plans to attend college to study physical therapy and to become a professional dancer.
Sarah Kaplan is the daughter of Ann and Steve Kaplan of Augusta. She participates in drama club, served on the executive committee for Chizzle Wizzle, writes for the school newspaper and has been selected to the National Honor Society. She volunteers at the Cohen Center, Johnson Hall, Bread of Life Ministries and Youth Ministry. She attended Seeds of Peace International as a sophomore. Her plans are to attend college and become an American Sign Language interpreter.
Morgan E. Neill is the daughter of Annmarie and Robert Neill of Augusta. She participates in varsity volleyball, swim team and lacrosse. She is a member of the student council. She volunteers her time at concessions for Cony athletics and serves as the student representative for the Augusta School Board. She plans to study nursing in college.
Kaci Rankins is the son of Laura and Ben Rankins of Augusta. He participates in Chizzle Wizzle and is a member of the Cony Madrigals. He is a member of the football and wrestling teams. He traveled to perform in Y-Arts. Rankins was selected for the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Seminar. He plans to study audio engineering in college.
Joseph Wathen is the son of Kelley and Dan Wathen of Augusta. He participates in football, wrestling and lacrosse. Wathen has been selected to the National Honor Society. He is a member of the Cony Madrigals, Chizzle Wizzle, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and German National Honor Society. He volunteers as a youth football coach and is a leader in his church youth group, vacation Bible school and works at community dinners. He plans to attend college.
