The Maine Principals’ Association’s Classification Committee granted requests Wednesday by both Falmouth and Windham high schools to shift from Class A Eastern Maine to Western Maine in field hockey and soccer for the next two years.

The committee had placed both schools in Eastern Maine to better balance the number of teams in both regions. Both schools petitioned the MPA to stay in the West. The six-member committee voted 5 to 1 in favor of their soccer request and 4-2 for field hockey.

Falmouth, a perennial boys and girls soccer power in Class B. will now be in Class A after the enrollment figure for Class A in soccer was dropped from a starting point of 725 to 705. That moved Falmouth into Class A.

The Windham boys won the Class A state soccer title in 2011. Windham has an enrollment of 1045 students.

Enrollments were based on figures from April 2012.

The classification committee sets enrollment numbers for all sports along with cheerleading and drama every two years. This policy is for the 2013-14 and 2014-15 school years.

The proposal will be sent to the MPA’s Interscholastic Management Committee for final approval on March 14. Schools have until Feb. 6 to request further modifications.
