PORTLAND — TechMaine, the trade group that dissolved last year amid declining membership, has relaunched as a for-profit company offering online training courses and a jobs bank.

The organization was resurrected by its former executive director Joe Kumiszcza, who is running for a seat in Maine’s House of Representatives. Kumiszcza said having TechMaine operate as a for-profit company eliminates potential conflcts of interest because the corporation will have the freedom to promote anyone’s activities rather than only highlight its dues-paying members. 

The group was originally founded in 1992 as the Maine Software Developers Association but morphed over the years to reflect the state’s changing technology sector and to include biotechnology, information technology and semiconductor firms.

Kumiszcza bought the assets of the group out of bankruptcy in June and relaunched the website at the end of July. One of the biggest priorities was relaunching the jobs database and calendar of events for the tech community. The site also features a “tech connect” service that allows companies to make a plea for help and get linked with potential problem-solvers.

He also expects to have about 100 technology courses, ranging from entry-level basics to expert technology. Revenue from the courses will fund the organization. Kumiszcza aims to look for another staffer later this year.
