STANDISH — Cony High School junior Sonja Morse was nearly perfect Saturday in leading the Rams to a 2-0 victory against South Portland for the Class A state softball championship.
Morse allowed just one hit, a two-out single to Danica Gleason in the bottom of the seventh inning. Gleason was picked off first base to end the game, though, as Morse faced the minimum 21 batters. She also issued a walk in the fifth inning but pinch runner Abby Young was picked off second base.
Cecilia Fuller got the game-winning hit for Cony, a two-out single in the fourth inning that plated a pair of runs. South Portland starter Erin Bogdanovich issued three of her four walks during the inning to set up fuller’s game-winner.
The Rams managed just three hits off Bogdanovich who struck out 13. Morse struck out 10. The win completes a perfect season for Cony at 20-0 and is the school’s first softball championship since 1983. Western Maine champion South Portland finishes at 17-3.
