A state representative will be the Republican State Senate nominee for District 20 after a landslide victory, according to unofficial results.

Rep. Les Fossel, of Alna, defeated Stuart Smith, of Edgecomb, 2,062-1,201.

“Stuart worked hard and that’s admirable,” Fossel said Wednesday. “I’ve served for a very long time on a lot of things in the county and I’m very well known and that’s what Stuart was running against.”

Fossel will face state Sen. Christopher Johnson, D-Somerville, who won a special election for the Senate District 20 seat in February.

“Essentially, I’ve just beaten off a challenge from the right,” Fossel said. “I think Chris is going to have a hard time saying he is anything other than a liberal Democrat.”

Fossel, 65, is a two-term legislator and restoration contractor with assignments on three legislative committees — Health and Human Services, Judiciary and Government Oversight. He is also chair of the legislature’s unofficial Moderate Caucus.

Smith, 49, is an Edgecomb selectman and computer programmer who is also on the State Board of Corrections.

Fossel won all towns in the district except Boothbay, Westport, Monhegan Plantation and Edgecomb, winning Waldoboro 283-182 and Wiscasset 222-112.

The district represents Washington, Windsor and Friendship and every Lincoln County town but Dresden.
