ORONO — University of Maine football coach Jack Cosgrove said this afternoon that tight end Derek Buttles underwent reconstructive ACL surgery today, less than three weeks after he injured his knee in a 31-15 win Sept. 17 at Albany.
Buttles, a a 6-foot-5, 230-pound redshirt senior, will miss the remainder of the season rehabbing after the injury.
Buttles played in 11 games in 2010, catching 27 passes for 210 yards and a touchdown, and was an all-Colonial Athletic Association second-team selection. This season, Buttles played in three games, with 10 catches for 193 yards and a touchdown.
Buttles is the second tight end Maine has lost so far this season. Jeff Falvey, a junior, has missed Maine’s first four games because of an ACL injury, and redshirt sophomore Justin Perrillo and freshman Cody Simcox are Maine’s remaining tight ends.
